PPM (Parts Per Million)

Definition

PPM, parts per million, is a unit for measuring very dilute concentrations, used in exterior cleaning to describe chlorine strength in water and in plant-protection rinse water.

Chlorine concentration is sometimes expressed in ppm rather than percent, especially at low strengths. As a rough anchor, 1% sodium hypochlorite is about 10,000 ppm available chlorine, so even a heavily diluted house-wash mix carries a high ppm relative to drinking water.

Knowing ppm helps when you are matching a manufacturer spec or judging how dilute a runoff stream is. For mixing day to day, most operators think in percent solution, but the two describe the same thing at different scales.
