Chlorine Strength

Definition

Chlorine strength is the concentration of available chlorine in your sodium hypochlorite, which decides how far you can dilute it and how fast it loses power in storage.

Fresh pool-grade SH is usually 10–12.5%, but it degrades over time, with heat, and in sunlight. A drum that has sat through a hot summer can test well below its label, which is why a mix that worked last month can suddenly leave growth behind.

Many pros check strength with test strips or a hydrometer and rotate stock so the oldest gets used first. If your results slip, suspect weak chlorine before you suspect your technique.
