Sodium Hypochlorite (SH)

Definition

Sodium hypochlorite (SH) is the active ingredient in bleach and the primary chemical used in soft washing to kill algae, mold, and mildew on exterior surfaces.

Professionals usually buy SH at 10–12.5% strength from a pool supply, far stronger than the ~6% in household bleach, then dilute it to the percent needed for the surface - around 1% for a house wash and 2–3% for a roof.

SH must be handled with care: wear eye and skin protection, never mix it with acids (which releases chlorine gas), and pre-wet and rinse plants before and after to protect them.
