NPDES Stormwater

Definition

NPDES is the federal Clean Water Act permit program that governs what may enter storm drains, the reason wash water and chemical runoff often cannot be allowed to reach the gutter.

Storm drains usually flow untreated to creeks and rivers, so washing oily, chlorinated, or chemical-laden water into them can violate NPDES rules and local stormwater ordinances. Enforcement and fines are real, especially on commercial sites.

Compliant crews block or reclaim runoff, neutralize where needed, and dispose of wash water properly rather than letting it run to the drain. Knowing the local rules and being able to show a containment plan is part of bidding serious commercial work.
