Neutralizing

Definition

Neutralizing is bringing a treated surface or runoff back toward a neutral pH after an acidic or chlorine cleaner, to protect the surface, the surrounding plants, and stormwater.

After an acid cleaning - rust removal, efflorescence, or a wood brightener - the surface and the runoff are acidic. Neutralizing rinses or counters that so the finish is not etched and the runoff does not enter a storm drain at a harmful pH.

Neutralizing also matters in plant protection. Pre-wetting plants and giving them a final clean-water rinse dilutes any chlorine that drifted onto them. It is a small step that prevents callbacks and dead landscaping.
