Gloeocapsa Magma

Definition

Gloeocapsa magma is the algae responsible for the black streaks and stains on asphalt-shingle roofs, the growth a roof soft wash is designed to kill.

Those dark roof streaks are a colony of algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. It spreads by spores carried on the wind, which is why one streaked roof in a neighborhood is often followed by others.

High pressure would strip the shingle granules, so the only correct treatment is a soft wash with sodium hypochlorite that kills the algae at the root. A proper kill clears the streaks and slows their return for years.
