Soft Wash vs Pressure Washing: Which to Use on Each Surface
The short answer
Soft washing relies mainly on a labeled cleaning process with low-force application and rinse; pressure washing relies more on mechanical force. Choose from the exact material, coating, condition, manufacturer instructions, contaminant, drainage, and a hidden test—not from a universal PSI chart. “Soft wash” and “pressure wash” describe broad cleaning approaches, not recipes or safety approvals. A low-force process may still use an incompatible product, and a pressure process may still damage sound-looking material when the nozzle, distance, angle, flow, or dwell is wrong. What is the actual difference between soft wash and pressure washing?
Both clean exteriors. The mechanism is what differs.
Pressure washing relies on mechanical force - water velocity measured in PSI (pounds per square inch) and flow measured in GPM (gallons per minute). It strips dirt, gum, and loose material off surfaces hard enough to take the hit.

When can a mechanical process be considered?
Some sound hardscape can tolerate a mechanical-cleaning process, but age, sealer, cracks, joints, aggregate, mortar, and prior damage still control the method.

Even on concrete, the machine setting is not the decision. Cure, strength, finish, aggregate, cracks, repairs, coating, contamination, drainage, and equipment setup can all change what is appropriate. A cleaning process may combine compatible chemistry and controlled mechanical action, but only when the surface and product instructions support the complete sequence.
How wrong pressure damages each surface
The possible damage is material-specific, and some signs may appear only after the surface dries or water has entered an assembly:
- Asphalt shingles: granule loss and other damage; manufacturer instructions and warranty terms govern.
- Vinyl siding: cracks on cold or brittle panels and water entering behind laps, openings, or penetrations.
