Soft Washing

Definition

Soft washing is a low-pressure cleaning method that uses a chemical solution - usually sodium hypochlorite and a surfactant - to kill organic growth like algae and mildew, instead of relying on high pressure.

Soft washing applies the cleaning solution at garden-hose pressure and lets the chemistry do the work, then rinses. It is the correct method for surfaces that high pressure would damage: roof shingles, vinyl and painted siding, screens, and stucco.

Because it kills growth at the root rather than just blasting the surface, a soft wash typically stays clean longer than a high-pressure rinse of the same surface.
