Oxalic Acid

Definition

Oxalic acid is a mild wood-brightening and rust-removing acid that restores color to cleaned wood and neutralizes the alkalinity left by percarbonate or bleach cleaners.

After a deck is cleaned with an alkaline product, the wood often looks dull or blotchy. An oxalic-acid brightener drops the pH back down, brightens the grain, and removes tannin and rust marks, leaving an even surface ready for stain or sealer.

It is also effective on rust stains in concrete. As with any acid, never let it contact sodium hypochlorite, wear protection, and rinse thoroughly. Acid and SH together produce dangerous chlorine gas.
