1. Book the nearby job first
A compatible job near confirmed work may carry lower incremental travel. Check requested timing, access, crew and equipment fit, scope duration, weather slack, and complete expected contribution. Offer the best real nearby window first; confirm another date or decline if the customer cannot use it. The anchor does not make the added job free.
2. Group stops into zone days
Create an initial set of zones from actual completed stops, drive time, traffic barriers, crew bases, service duration, and customer windows. There is no universal zone count or weekday pattern. Offer compatible windows, track the result, and redraw zones when operating data changes. Pair the method with constraint-based crew scheduling when more than one crew is involved.
3. Batch your estimates
Define what can be quoted from complete customer-provided evidence and what requires a site visit. Unknown substrate, staining, access, drainage, utilities, hazards, commercial procurement, or large scope can justify a dedicated visit. 4. Stage the night before

You can’t cut what you can’t see. The math is short:
Loaded travel cost per comparable completed job = (actual windshield hours × loaded vehicle-and-labor cost per hour) ÷ comparable completed jobs
Run it on a representative week and watch what density does to the same $360 ticket. Figures are illustrative:

Convert one hour of driving into a specific operating change
“Drive less” is not actionable. Choose the largest preventable travel block from last week and trace its cause. A cross-town jump may come from offering every customer any day. A supply run may come from a missing loadout check. A second estimate trip may come from weak intake photos. A callback drive may come from unclear scope or missing proof.
Then change the earliest decision that created the trip:
