Do not buy five capabilities because the demo calls all of them “optimization.” Write the current failure in one sentence and test the smallest workflow that would remove it.
Route optimization, route assignment, and route filling are different
Road or stop optimization
Road optimization takes a set of stops and proposes an order under stated inputs. A serious test asks which stops are eligible, which time windows are locked, where the day starts and ends, which road or traffic model is used, and whether the owner can inspect the proposed change before saving it.
This can reduce manual sequencing work. It does not, by itself, create another paying job or prove the route is profitable.
Route and crew assignment
Assignment organizes work by a route, territory, shift, truck, or crew. It answers who owns this work? and helps the calendar match field responsibility. It may exist with or without automatic road ordering.

A route that looks compact can still underperform. The owner must distinguish:

Jobber: a broad field-service suite with documented optimization
Jobber's June 2026 help article says its new schedule can optimize anytime visits for a day or up to seven days and can work across selected team members. It also states that optimization happens on the web while the resulting order appears in the app. That is more specific and current than saying Jobber merely shows pins or “basic routing.”
The trial still matters. Fixed-time appointments and anytime visits are different. Confirm how your real appointment types, first/last stop, crew assignments, and customer promises behave. Also test whether switching scheduling models changes anything the office or crew depends on.
Housecall Pro: map routing, route-based scheduling, and a limited-alpha optimizer
Housecall Pro's help center documents several distinct features. Its schedule map can show scheduled-job routes and estimated travel. Its 2026 route-based scheduling documentation describes organizing work around route templates and assigned employees. A separate March 2026 article documents a drive-time optimizer that reorders scheduled jobs for one technician, supports locked jobs, and shows a proposed result—but labels the feature alpha and limited to a group of Pros.
That release label matters. Do not buy a plan assuming an alpha feature is available, permanent, or identical for every account. Ask support to confirm access and test the exact save/notification path.
Service Autopilot: recurring-service orientation with advanced routing marketed
Service Autopilot's official site lists advanced route optimization on its Pro tier as checked on the review date. Its positioning is strongly oriented toward recurring lawn, cleaning, snow, and landscaping operations. That may fit an operator with repeat routes and automation needs.
The public label “advanced route optimization” is not enough to compare algorithms or field behavior. Bring a real recurring route to the demo. Ask the vendor to show the inputs, locks, route change, mobile result, exception handling, export, and total plan/onboarding requirements rather than grading a marketing phrase.
WashRoute Pro: accepted flexible-work review, not road optimization
WashRoute Pro solves a narrower pressure-washing scheduling problem. Test 4: failure and rollback
- What happens when the anchor cancels?
- What happens when a tech calls out?
- Can a proposed change be rejected or reversed?
- Does a repeated click create a duplicate job?
- If data changed after the plan loaded, does the system force a refresh?
- Can a user alter an ID or URL to see another company's route or customer?
That last question is a real buying criterion. Multi-tenant field-service software should enforce workspace boundaries on the server, not merely hide another tenant's records in the interface. Compare similar days; weather, service mix, territory, and staffing can swamp a software effect. A proposed route is not a realized saving, a booked job is not collected cash, and one good afternoon is not a guaranteed monthly return.
